The STA is an association and sees itself as an independent link between the army, procurement authorities, business and science.

It promotes dialogue between the interest groups in this area and makes an active contribution to deepening mutual understanding, particularly with regard to the planning, development, procurement, use and disposal of goods and services required to implement Swiss security and armaments policy.

The STA was founded in 1955 and has around 400 members.
